Therapy looks different for everyone because no two people are the same. It really depends on what your goals are and how far along you are towards accomplishing them. My therapy style is eclectic--I do not subscribe to any one theoretical orientation. Instead, I use bits and pieces from many different theories, including Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Gestalt, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Systems theories. My theory of change is Psychodynamic: I believe that to truly overcome an issue, the root cause of it needs to be explored, understood, and accepted. From there, behavior can be changed and that change can be maintained. Without understanding and acceptance, old, self-destructive patterns of behavior can re-emerge. Thus, in our work together, we will work on moving through the issues you present and not around them. This is done through a lot of question-asking on my part and the willingness to be open and honest and work hard on yours! Sometimes I give homework and sometimes I have exercises to complete in session. Therapy will conclude once you have reached your treatment goals.
Prior to meeting for the first time, I will email
you my intake paperwork. Please complete this
before we meet so it does not cut into your
session time. When you arrive, I will review
your paperwork with you and ask you about
what brings you in to my office. I will collect
some history and then work with you to develop
concrete goals for treatment. Sometimes it
takes more than one session to develop
treatment goals.
